Adelaide and the SA model
Adelaide is named as an eligible city in Uber's October 2026 new-driver offer, and it sits under a South Australian model that is structured differently from Queensland's or Western Australia's. Where those states separate a driver authorisation from a vehicle licence, South Australia talks about accreditation, and it can attach to a person, a vehicle or a business.
The practical consequence for a new rideshare driver is simple but easy to miss: how much accreditation you need depends on whether you own the car. A driver who does not own the vehicle needs less than a registered owner does.
The two accreditations
SA.GOV.AU's guidance for small passenger vehicles (checked 9 October 2026) sets out a two-part model:
- Driver accreditation — what you need to carry passengers as a rideshare driver; and
- Operator accreditation — which a person also needs if they are the registered owner of the vehicle used to provide the service.
So if you own and drive your own car, you are dealing with both. If you drive a vehicle owned by someone else, the ownership-side accreditation sits with them. Confirm which applies to your situation with the South Australian regulator, since the answer changes what you file and pay.
Licence and medical requirements
For small passenger vehicle (rideshare) driver accreditation, the SA requirements (checked 9 October 2026) are:
- a current unrestricted South Australian driver's licence;
- a full Australian driver's licence held for a minimum of 6 months;
- relevant police clearances and minimum fitness requirements; and
- a certificate of fitness — commercial vehicle drivers, dated by a medical practitioner within the last 3 months.
The medical step has a currency rule — a certificate older than 3 months will not do — so time it around your application rather than well in advance. Uber's national baseline also sets the minimum age at 20 (it is 21 in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, which does not affect Adelaide).
Validity, cost and coverage
Three SA-specific details are worth flagging, because they differ from the other cities named in the offer:
- Validity. Rideshare driver accreditation is valid for 3 years, or until a linked check (such as a Working with Children Check) or your SA licence expires — whichever is sooner.
- Cost to apply. There is no cost to apply for rideshare driver accreditation, but annual instalment payments are required. That is a different structure from a single upfront fee.
- Coverage. SA has removed the separate out-of-metro accreditation, so metropolitan-based drivers can now operate statewide.
These are summaries of SA.GOV.AU's published position (checked 9 October 2026). Read them alongside your own case, and confirm the current fees and instalments before you budget.
The vehicle
South Australia defines the small passenger vehicle category by seating — up to and including 12 seats including the driver (SA.GOV.AU, checked 9 October 2026). On top of the state rules, Uber applies its own vehicle requirements, including a 5-star ANCAP rating or an approved exemption, and a roadworthiness inspection (Uber, checked 9 October 2026).
Check both layers before you commit a car to the work: meeting SA's category rules does not automatically meet Uber's.
Tax and registrations
Tax sits outside the accreditation system. Uber states that rideshare drivers must register for an ABN, and the ATO requires rideshare drivers to be GST registered regardless of turnover, because rideshare is a taxable supply. An ABN is free through the Australian Business Register. Our requirements guide covers this in more detail.
Confirm before you commit
Use this as a dated map, not a substitute for the source. Before you pay anything or restructure your week, confirm with the South Australian regulator (a) whether you need driver accreditation only or driver plus operator accreditation, (b) the current medical and police-clearance requirements, and (c) the fee and instalment structure — then complete onboarding in Uber's own signup flow.
