Same state, separate market
Because the Gold Coast and Brisbane are both in Queensland, they share one regulator and one set of authorisations — unlike, say, Brisbane and Perth, which sit under different state systems. What differs between the two cities is the market you drive in, not the paperwork you file.
That is worth separating, because a lot of rideshare advice treats "the Gold Coast" as though it had its own rules. It does not. The Gold Coast is named as an eligible city in Uber's October 2026 new-driver offer, but the rules you must satisfy to drive there are Queensland's.
The authorisations are statewide
Queensland issues its passenger-transport approvals at state level, so a Booked Hire/Taxi (BHTX) Driver Authorisation and a Booked Hire Service Licence (BHSL) are not limited to a single city. In practice that means the same two-track structure described in our Brisbane guide applies on the Gold Coast: you are authorised as a driver, and your vehicle is separately licensed and insured for booked-hire use.
Confirm the detail with TMR, and complete onboarding inside Uber's own flow for your area — the platform can apply its own city-level requirements on top of the state ones.
What you actually need to hold
Based on Uber's Queensland guidance and TMR (checked 9 October 2026), a Gold Coast driver needs:
- a current BHTX Driver Authorisation, for which a commercial standards medical assessment is required before you apply;
- a valid full driver's licence, held for a continuous period of at least 1 year (an Australian open, restricted, provisional or probationary licence, or a recognised overseas licence);
- to meet TMR's work-entitlement and suitability requirements, including criminal-history and traffic-history checks; and
- to complete a short driver safety education course (under 30 minutes) before using the app.
Uber's national baseline sets the minimum age at 20 (21 in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania), which does not affect the Gold Coast.
Insurance, inspection and vehicle
The vehicle needs its own approvals. On the Queensland side, that means a Booked Hire Service Licence (BHSL), generally with a current Certificate of Inspection unless exempt, and the correct class of CTP insurance for booked-hire use — a private class is not enough, and the wrong class can void your cover. On Uber's side, the car needs a 5-star ANCAP rating or an approved exemption, plus a roadworthiness inspection (Uber, checked 9 October 2026).
Check both layers before you register a car for this work, since satisfying one does not automatically satisfy the other.
Tax and registrations
Queensland rules and tax rules are separate. Uber states that rideshare drivers must register for an ABN, and the ATO requires rideshare drivers to be GST registered regardless of turnover, because rideshare is a taxable supply. An ABN is free through the Australian Business Register. Our requirements guide covers the details.
Planning your signup and timeline
Because the authorisations are statewide, the timeline is the same as Brisbane's: TMR publishes about 2–3 weeks for a driver authorisation, and the vehicle steps run alongside it. If you are trying to line up with a signup offer that counts from your signup date, remember the onboarding clock can run while TMR is still processing.
We have not reproduced a Queensland fee schedule here, because TMR publishes its own current fees and they change. Check TMR's fee pages and any medical or inspection costs directly.
Confirm before you commit
Treat this as a dated map, not the territory. Before you spend money or commit, confirm the current authorisation category, CTP class and inspection requirement with TMR, and complete onboarding in Uber's own signup flow. To sign up, our start driving page links to the public referral flow and our referral disclosure explains our interest in it.
Driving in Brisbane too? Its rules are the same, but the market is bigger — see driving with Uber in Brisbane. For the cross-state comparison, see Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Perth.
